If students are not trained to ask basic questions about the images which confront them, if they are not asked to examine the knowledge and assumptions which they already possess, they are being denied the opportunity to develop the most simple and essential critical tools.
Bio/Short Description
danah boyd is a Partner Researcher at Microsoft Research and the founder of Data & Society. Her research examines the intersection between technology and society focusing on how young people use social media as part of their everyday practices. More recently, she turned to focus on understanding how contemporary social inequities relate to technology and society more generally. She examines topics like media manipulation, the future of work, fairness and accountability in machine learning, combating bias in data, and the cultural dynamics surrounding artificial intelligence.
